What is BTZ?

Below-the-Zone (BTZ) promotion is a highly competitive program that allows exceptional Airmen to be promoted to Senior Airman (E-4) six months earlier than their peers. This early promotion opportunity recognizes outstanding performance and potential.

Eligibility Requirements
  • Must be an Airman First Class (E-3)
  • Must have 36 months Time in Service (TIS) but less than 42 months
  • Must have 20 months Time in Grade (TIG) but less than 26 months
  • Must not have any negative quality indicators
  • Must meet fitness standards
  • Must have completed required training
Selection Process

1. Nomination

Supervisors nominate eligible Airmen based on performance and potential.

2. Package Review

Selection boards review nomination packages including EPRs, decorations, and achievements.

3. Board Selection

Wing-level boards select the top candidates based on the whole person concept.

Tips for Success
  • Maintain excellent performance ratings
  • Pursue professional development opportunities
  • Volunteer for additional duties and community service
  • Complete education goals (CCAF, civilian degrees)
  • Maintain physical fitness standards
  • Seek leadership opportunities
  • Build strong relationships with supervisors and mentors
Key Takeaways

BTZ promotion is highly competitive and requires consistent excellence across all areas. Start preparing early by focusing on performance, education, fitness, and leadership development. Work closely with your supervisor to understand expectations and create a development plan that positions you for success.
